for maintenance according to Google, since the 13th according to Wikipedia, forever according to Digg (apparently they stopped taking payments two days ago, but this wouldn’t be the first time). Interesting. I don’t use it very much, but I’d miss it if it went. And I’m constantly surprised at it’s continued existence…

NSA has massive call database

In case you missed it, from USA TODAY:

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.

Universal Music settles payola probe

$12m! Might as well just slap them on the wrist. From The Boston Globe:

Universal Music Group, the world’s largest record company, settled a payola investigation with New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer for $12 million and agreed to stop bribing radio stations to secure airplay for its artists.

Change Your No Reply Divert Ring Time

I keep missing calls when the phone is in the other room, because the handset is set to increasing ring, and it’s really only getting going when the No Reply divert kicks in. According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the four holding companies spent a total of $3.7 million to promote themselves in the U.S. in 2005, down 15% from the $4.4 million they spent in 2004.

Considering that agencies recommend their clients spend 10% of their revenues on marketing, the big four are spending .01% of their combined $29.3 billion in global revenue. Mull that for a second or two.

Remember Genesis Europe, that I was so fond of defending on the forums and mailing lists because several of my drinking buddies worked there, and I thought they really had a chance of pulling off an unbundled DSL service? Of course you do. Well, the man behind it is back, and this time I can see the wacky side… (more…)

Right Domain, Wrong Domain

John Breslin announced a new classified ads website this morning, at the domain adverts.ie. A good site like this is sorely lacking in Ireland, and it being tied to Boards.ie is a boon to both the Boards crew and the community, since they have a captive audience that doesn’t need to (re-)register to post an item.
